Paris AI Startup Mistral Raises $415 Million, Reaches $2 Billion Valuation

French artificial intelligence startup Mistral AI closes a massive $415 million Series A round led by Andreessen Horowitz. The company simultaneously launches a commercial platform to monetize its foundational language models.

Paris-based startup Mistral AI officially closes a $415 million Series A funding round that values the company at approximately $2 billion. Andreessen Horowitz leads the investment, with participation from Lightspeed Venture Partners, Salesforce, BNP Paribas, and several other prominent firms. This massive influx of capital comes just six months after the company raised a $112 million seed round to establish a European competitor to OpenAI.

Alongside the funding news, Mistral AI launches its commercial platform to generate revenue from its technology. The company previously releases its Mistral 7B model as a free, open-source download under the Apache 2.0 license, allowing developers to run the 7-billion-parameter model on their own hardware. While that initial model remains freely available, Mistral now restricts access to its most advanced model through a paid API on the new commercial platform.

The French startup also plays a significant role in shaping the recent political agreement on the EU AI Act. Mistral actively lobbies for exemptions for foundational models, arguing that regulations should focus on end-user products rather than underlying technology. Despite these lobbying efforts, the final EU deal requires foundational model developers to meet transparency requirements and share technical documentation and dataset summaries.
