Physical Intelligence announces a massive $400 million funding round led by Jeff Bezos, Thrive Capital, and Lux Capital to develop a universal artificial intelligence brain for robots. The round, which also includes investments from OpenAI and Redpoint Ventures, values the startup at approximately $2.4 billion. Founded by former Google robotics scientist Karol Hausman and elite researchers from UC Berkeley and Stanford, the company aims to move beyond the limitations of single-task industrial machines.
Current robots typically function as limited specialists that struggle to adapt to messy, unstructured environments like homes or restaurants. Physical Intelligence addresses this challenge by building a single generalist model named pi-zero that can control any robot to complete complex, multi-part tasks. Users simply instruct the robot on what they want done, and the system figures out how to adapt its behavior to the surrounding physical space without requiring complex programming.
Unlike standard large language models, pi-zero processes a diverse combination of text, images, video, and embodied physical experiences such as grasping and manipulating objects. The startup demonstrates this capability by successfully fine-tuning the AI to get robots to fold laundry, make coffee, bus tables, and assemble boxes. This foundational approach essentially allows any compatible robot to learn new behaviors simply by understanding natural language commands and real-world physics.
