Pixel 8 Pro Becomes First Smartphone to Run On-Device Gemini Nano AI

Google's December Feature Drop brings Gemini Nano to the Pixel 8 Pro, enabling on-device AI features like Summarize in Recorder and Gboard Smart Reply. Additional AI-driven photo and productivity updates also roll out across the Pixel portfolio.

Google introduces Gemini Nano as its most efficient model for on-device tasks, and it now runs directly on the Pixel 8 Pro. Powered by the Google Tensor G3 chip, this integration makes the Pixel 8 Pro the first smartphone engineered to run this advanced generative AI model locally without needing a network connection.

This on-device AI immediately powers two key features on the Pixel 8 Pro. The Recorder app uses Gemini Nano to generate summaries of conversations, interviews, and presentations entirely offline, while Gboard uses the model to provide conversational Smart Reply suggestions in messaging apps like WhatsApp as a developer preview.

Keeping sensitive data on the device rather than sending it to the cloud provides a significant privacy advantage for users. Beyond these on-device capabilities, Google plans to unlock new Assistant with Bard features using the broader Gemini model family early next year, alongside new AI-powered photo and video tools rolling out to the wider Pixel lineup today.
