Poly Network Recovers Most of Record $600 Million Crypto Heist

Hackers return nearly all of the $600 million stolen from decentralized finance platform Poly Network in a historic cyber heist. Only $33 million remains frozen, while a portion of the returned funds stays locked in a multi-signature wallet.

Hackers return nearly all of the $600 million stolen from Poly Network in what the decentralized finance platform calls the biggest heist in DeFi history. An anonymous person claiming responsibility for the cyberattack states that they carried out the exploit for fun and always planned to give the funds back. The attacker exploits a vulnerability in Poly Network's code to transfer tokens across different blockchains into their own wallets.

Out of the massive total, the hacker sends over $342 million directly to three digital currency wallets designated by Poly Network. However, the tether issuer freezes $33 million worth of its stablecoin using a built-in failsafe shortly after the theft occurs. Another $268 million of the recovered assets sits in a shared account that requires passwords from both the platform and the hacker to unlock.

The mysterious hacker maintains that they will provide the final key needed to access the remaining locked funds when everyone is ready. Blockchain analysts warn that the attacker could still make these funds inaccessible if they choose not to cooperate. This unprecedented situation highlights the unique security challenges and systemic risks present in the rapidly growing decentralized finance sector.
