The Poynter Institute launches a new chatbot on WhatsApp to help users globally debunk over 4,000 coronavirus-related hoaxes. This free tool relies on information from more than 100 independent fact-checkers across 70 countries to build the largest database of debunked COVID-19 falsehoods. People use the service to quickly fact-check widespread myths, such as the origins of the virus or unproven herbal cures like garlic.
Users access the 24/7 chatbot by saving a specific phone number and texting "hi" or by clicking a direct link. After initiating the conversation, users type a keyword or short phrase to receive an immediate, fact-checked response. The system automatically identifies a user's country through their mobile code to deliver relevant information verified by local fact-checking organizations, alongside general tips to combat the outbreak.
The chatbot currently operates only in English, though WhatsApp plans to add support for Hindi, Spanish, and Portuguese soon. While the service aggregates anonymous query data to share with research partners, it strictly protects user privacy and never shares personal information. This initiative combats the rapid spread of misinformation on messaging platforms during the global health crisis.
