Princeton Researchers Develop Open Source Tool to Monitor Smart Home Privacy

A new web app called IoT Inspector allows users to easily monitor their smart home devices to see if they are secretly sending data to third parties. The Princeton University research team also uses the collected network traffic to study IoT security and privacy risks.

Researchers at Princeton University create an open-source web app called IoT Inspector that allows users to monitor the network traffic of their smart home devices. The tool aims to help consumers easily determine whether gadgets like smart speakers or robot vacuums share data with third parties. Currently, the application is available only for Mac OS, although a waitlist exists for Windows and Linux users.

During lab testing, the researchers discover concerning behaviors from common household gadgets. They find that a Chromecast device constantly contacts Google's servers even when idle, and a Geeni smart bulb continuously communicates with a China-based cloud platform. These findings highlight the potential for smart devices to "snitch" on users without their knowledge.

Unlike complex methods like packet sniffing, IoT Inspector requires no special hardware or complicated setup, though it does not work with Safari and needs Firefox or Chrome. Users of the tool automatically contribute their device data to Princeton's ongoing research project on IoT privacy and security. The university team plans to study these network performance risks and may share the full dataset with other approved researchers.
