AI startup Rabbit announces the r1, a compact mobile device that aims to simplify smartphone usage by performing tasks on behalf of the user. Powered by a Large Action Model (LAM) and rabbit OS, the device learns how humans interact with apps to execute complex intentions through natural voice commands. Instead of navigating traditional applications, users simply press a push-to-talk button to ask the r1 to do things like order food, book rides, or play music.
Designed in collaboration with Teenage Engineering, the bright orange r1 features a 2.88-inch touchscreen, a rotating camera for photos and video calls, a navigation scroll wheel, and a USB-C port. The gadget operates entirely over the internet without downloading any apps, though it requires a SIM card for cellular data and the user's logins to access specific services. Battery life depends on usage, powered by a 1,000mAh battery inside the pocket-sized hardware.
Users have the ability to teach the r1 multi-step routines, such as researching a vacation spot, securing hotel reservations, and finding local activities, which the device then repeats independently. The AI system is even capable of navigating complex desktop software like Photoshop to execute intricate actions. Priced at $200 with no subscription fees required, the Rabbit r1 is currently available for pre-order and is expected to ship to customers in March or April of 2024.
