RIAA Subpoenas Discord to Unmask Users of Allegedly Infringing AI Hub Server
The recording industry group demands Discord reveal the identities of users sharing copyrighted music files in a massive AI-focused community. Discord faces a late June deadline to hand over the identifying information or oppose the legal request.
The RIAA officially subpoenas Discord to uncover the identities of users participating in an "AI Hub" server that allegedly distributes copyrighted music without permission. In late May, the music industry group sends a formal letter demanding the immediate deletion of the server, which currently boasts over 145,000 members and hosts various AI models and guides.
Discord refuses to shut down the community despite a follow-up removal request on June 12th, prompting the RIAA to escalate the matter with a legal subpoena. The industry group specifically points to unauthorized copies of songs from major artists like Mariah Carey, Shakira, and Frank Sinatra as evidence of the infringement occurring within the server's chats.
The subpoena gives Discord until June 30th to oppose the request or hand over detailed user information, including names, physical addresses, and IP addresses. An administrator for the AI Hub tells TorrentFreak that the dispute likely stems from links to full datasets rather than the AI voice models themselves, noting that the server's rules explicitly prohibit infringing content.
