Rivian Reaches $100 Billion Valuation on Record-Breaking IPO Day

Electric vehicle startup Rivian surges nearly 30 percent in its market debut, achieving a massive valuation that surpasses Ford and General Motors despite producing only a handful of vehicles.

Electric vehicle startup Rivian experiences a massive surge in its stock market debut, pushing its valuation past $100 billion and surpassing legacy automakers Ford and General Motors. The company prices its shares at $78 each, well above initial expectations, and raises $11.9 billion to mark the largest U.S. initial public offering since Facebook in 2012. Investors show intense excitement as shares open at $106.75 and close the day at $100.73.

This landmark listing takes advantage of a sizzling global IPO market that sets a new record in 2021 by raising $360 billion across 1,818 flotations. Rivian stands out as the world's largest IPO of the year and the third-largest in U.S. history. The impressive market reception highlights a massive shift in investor confidence toward the emerging electric era in the auto industry.

Despite its staggering valuation, Rivian operates at a significant loss and delivers only 156 vehicles by the end of October. Backed by a 20 percent stake from Amazon and an order for 100,000 electric delivery vans, the California-based company targets the lucrative pickup truck and SUV markets with its R1T and R1S models. Rivian cultivates an eco-friendly adventure brand image as it attempts to scale up production to meet heavy demand.
