Rocket Lab and Sierra Space Partner with Military for Hypersonic Cargo Delivery

Rocket Lab and Sierra Space sign separate agreements with the U.S. Department of Defense to explore superfast cargo delivery on Earth using their flight systems. These Cooperative Research and Development Agreements (CRADAs) with USTRANSCOM focus on utilizing Rocket Lab's Electron and Neutron rockets, alongside Sierra Space's Dream Chaser spaceplane, for point-to-point hypersonic transportation of equipment and personnel.
The military collaboration extends beyond the launch vehicles to include cargo capsules like Sierra Space's Shooting Star module and Rocket Lab's Photon spacecraft. While the Electron rocket has a proven flight record, the Neutron rocket and Dream Chaser spaceplane are still in active development. Rocket Lab CEO Peter Beck emphasizes that this technology offers a revolutionary ability to move goods globally in just a matter of hours to respond to natural disasters and emergencies.
These partnerships represent a key part of the Air Force's Rocket Cargo project, which aims to leverage falling launch costs to enable rapid, affordable military logistics. Rather than developing the technology independently, the government acts as a research partner with the ultimate goal of becoming the first customer to procure these commercial capabilities through service leases.
