Small-satellite launch provider Rocket Lab breaks ground on a third launch pad, placing it directly next to its existing facility on the Mahia peninsula in New Zealand. This expansion occurs just as the company officially opens its second launch site in Virginia, giving the privately held aerospace firm a significant global presence. The New Zealand site remains the only privately owned and operated orbital launch facility in the world.
The company designs the new Mahia pad to support rapid response and high-volume missions, while the Virginia location primarily serves clients who require launches from American soil. To support this increased launch cadence, Rocket Lab utilizes a massive carbon composite manufacturing robot that reduces Electron rocket construction time from weeks down to mere hours.
Having two active pads at the same New Zealand site gives Rocket Lab incredible flexibility to shuffle its launch schedule and accommodate last-minute customer requests. The company is currently developing a method to recover the Electron's first-stage booster, a move that further reduces turnaround time and costs. Ultimately, Rocket Lab aims to achieve a mission turnaround rate of just a few days between launches.
