Unlike SpaceX, the company avoids propulsive landings and instead relies on a turnaround burn in space and a parachute to slow the returning booster. This unique approach eliminates the need for complex landing legs and propulsive maneuvers.
The company takes a careful, data-driven approach to achieve this ambitious goal. Rocket Lab currently gathers extensive telemetry during its flights and plans an ocean splashdown on its tenth mission to test the recovery process. While a specific flight date for the actual aerial capture remains unannounced, the company actively prepares the necessary technology and analysis.
CEO Peter Beck emphasizes that increasing launch frequency drives this initiative, as reusing even a single stage effectively doubles the production ratio. He notes that managing the extreme return speeds presents the greatest challenge, while the actual helicopter capture is relatively simple. Rocket Lab currently operates commercially from New Zealand and plans to expand its launch capabilities to Virginia.
