Runway Commits $5 Million Fund to Back AI-Assisted Filmmakers

Runway dedicates $5 million in cash and up to $2 million in service credits to finance up to 100 original films that utilize its generative video model. This initiative, called the Hundred Film Fund, supports a wide variety of video-based projects, including features, shorts, documentaries, music videos, and experimental formats. The company states that this funding pool has the potential to grow to $10 million as the program evolves over time.
The fund targets filmmakers who struggle to secure backing from traditional production companies for projects that rely on new, experimental tools. While Runway dangles the possibility of grants as large as $1 million, the exact distribution of the cash among the 100 projects remains flexible and depends on individual production needs. Additionally, the program offers five "director residency" positions for creators with significant industry clout.
Selected filmmakers retain full ownership and creative control over their work, though they are required to provide biweekly production updates and allow Runway to showcase the final results. Industry figures like Tribeca co-founder Jane Rosenthal and will.i.am act as advisors to help choose the awardees and provide guidance. Ultimately, Runway hopes this financial infusion encourages breakthrough uses of AI video generation by creators who otherwise lack the resources to experiment.
