Runway Secures $315M at $5.3B Valuation to Build Advanced World Models

AI video startup Runway raises a massive $315 million Series E to develop next-generation world models and expand into new industries. The funding round nearly doubles the company's valuation to $5.3 billion.

AI video-generation startup Runway raises $315 million in a Series E round that nearly doubles its valuation to $5.3 billion. The company plans to use this fresh capital to pre-train the next generation of world models, which are AI systems that build internal representations of environments to plan for future events. Runway views this technology as a crucial step beyond the current capabilities of large language models.

The funding arrives shortly after Runway releases Gen 4.5, a high-definition video-generation model that introduces native audio and long-form, multi-shot capabilities. This latest model outperforms competing offerings from both Google and OpenAI on several key industry benchmarks. To support its highly compute-intensive operations, Runway also signs a recent deal with CoreWeave to significantly expand its infrastructure capacity.

While Runway historically serves customers in media and entertainment, it now sees growing adoption in gaming, robotics, medicine, and climate research. The company faces steep competition in the world models space from rivals like Fei-Fei Li's World Labs and Google DeepMind. Led by General Atlantic with participation from major tech investors like Nvidia, Adobe, and AMD, the round will also help Runway rapidly expand its 140-person team across research, engineering, and sales.
