Russia cuts off access to Facebook and restricts Twitter in response to the platforms limiting state-backed media outlets. The Russian communications authority, Roskomnadzor, cites 26 cases of discrimination against Russian media, including restrictions on RT, Sputnik, and RIA. This crackdown follows European Union and British mandates that require the removal of Russian state-sponsored channels from television broadcasts and social media.
Meta, which also owns Instagram, states that it is working urgently to restore Facebook services within the country. In addition to Meta, other major technology platforms like YouTube, TikTok, and Telegram comply with the European directives to restrict Russian state media content. As a result of the Russian government's actions, users in Russia currently see error messages when attempting to access Facebook, while Instagram remains functional.
Meta President of Global Affairs Nick Clegg condemns the ban, noting that millions of ordinary Russians now find themselves cut off from reliable information and their everyday ways of connecting with family and friends. The White House echoes these concerns, characterizing the blockade as a deliberate effort to prevent Russian citizens from accessing independent news and highlighting a broader pattern of censorship and threats against journalists.
