Space debris generated by a Russian anti-satellite missile test poses a lasting threat to satellites in low Earth orbit and astronauts aboard the International Space Station. The test targets the defunct Soviet surveillance satellite Cosmos 1408, which orbits at an altitude of about 404 miles above Earth. The 2-ton spacecraft breaks apart into at least 1,500 trackable fragments, creating a massive cloud of hazardous material.
This sudden influx of debris forces astronauts and cosmonauts aboard the International Space Station to repeatedly take shelter in their transport vehicles for safety. Experts warn that the debris field remains a persistent danger to space station crews and the heavily utilized low Earth orbit region. Furthermore, the U.S. Space Command states that the strike produces hundreds of thousands of smaller, invisible pieces that evade ground-based tracking systems.
The lingering space junk significantly impacts global space operations by forcing satellite operators to perform more than double their usual number of avoidance maneuvers in the coming years. Initial assessments indicate that these fragments stay in orbit for years and potentially decades.
