Russian Anti-Satellite Weapon Test Generates Dangerous Orbital Debris Field

Russia destroys one of its own defunct satellites in a direct-ascent anti-satellite test, creating over 1,500 pieces of trackable debris. The resulting orbital debris field forces International Space Station crew members to seek immediate shelter.

Russia conducts a direct-ascent anti-satellite (ASAT) test by destroying its own defunct satellite, Cosmos 1408, which sits in orbit since 1982. This destructive test generates a massive cloud of at least 1,500 trackable pieces of debris in low Earth orbit. U.S. officials condemn the action as dangerous and highly irresponsible behavior that directly jeopardizes the long-term sustainability of outer space.

The newly created debris field poses an immediate and ongoing threat to human spaceflight, forcing the seven crew members aboard the International Space Station to take emergency shelter. The crew, which includes four Americans, two Russians, and one German astronaut, seals off several modules of the station as its orbit repeatedly intersects with the hazardous debris cloud.

Because the collision occurs just 80 kilometers above the space station's trajectory, the long-lived debris threatens vital satellites and other space objects for decades to come. NASA announces that it continues to monitor the situation closely, while international leaders warn that this test endangers the security, economic, and scientific interests of all nations operating in space.
