Salesforce CEO Marc Benioff expresses deep excitement about generative AI but warns that the technology is currently oversold. He states that customers hear untrue claims about what enterprise AI can achieve today and directly blames Microsoft for doing a tremendous disservice to the entire industry and AI research community.
Benioff criticizes Microsoft Copilot specifically, comparing the AI assistant to Clippy, the widely mocked 1990s Microsoft Office paperclip. He dismisses grand predictions from AI leaders who claim the technology is already curing cancer or solving climate change, making it clear that large language models are not a direct bridge to artificial general intelligence.
To support his argument, Benioff points to a Gartner report indicating that only a quarter of organizations testing Copilot plan a large-scale rollout. Despite his criticisms of Microsoft and other AI proponents, Benioff continues to heavily promote AI within Salesforce's own products following the company's massive Dreamforce conference.
