Samsung officially reveals the Galaxy Fold, a highly polished foldable handset that transforms from a 4.6-inch phone into a 7.3-inch tablet. The device features a custom hinge designed to withstand hundreds of thousands of folds and brings major credibility to the foldable form factor. While competitor Royole beat Samsung to market, the Galaxy Fold aims to lead the future of a flagging mobile industry with a refined design that fits right alongside the new Galaxy S10.
The hardware packs impressive specifications, including 12GB of RAM, 512GB of storage, and a combined 4,380mAh battery split across two sides. Users also get a total of six cameras scattered across the device—three on the back, two on the inside, and one on the front. A visible crease appears on the inner display when it catches the light, though the actual impact on the viewing experience remains unclear until hands-on testing occurs.
Software plays a crucial role in the unique experience, with Samsung customizing Android to support a feature called "App Continuity." This allows users to seamlessly transition an app from the small outer screen to the larger inner display without losing their place. In tablet mode, the operating system supports running up to three separate app windows simultaneously. All of this premium engineering comes with a premium price tag, positioning the Galaxy Fold as an ultra-high-end luxury device.
