San Francisco ranks as the most prepared city in the world for new transportation technologies like AI, autonomous vehicles, and air taxis, according to a new urban mobility readiness index. The Oliver Wyman Forum and the University of California, Berkeley create this index by evaluating 70 global cities based on walkability, air quality, EV charging infrastructure, public transit access, and cycling infrastructure.
Overall, San Francisco takes the top spot in the general rankings, followed closely by Paris, Singapore, Munich, and Amsterdam. However, the rankings shift significantly when researchers factor in a new technology adoption sub-index that specifically measures how ready cities are for emerging tech like self-driving cars.
San Francisco easily secures the number one position in this tech-ready category, largely because it hosts numerous autonomous vehicle companies and supports a commercial robotaxi service operated by Waymo. Los Angeles, Shanghai, Beijing, and Seoul round out the top five cities that demonstrate the highest readiness for next-generation transportation technology.
