Scale AI, a San Francisco-based startup that provides data labeling services for artificial intelligence applications, achieves a $7.3 billion valuation after raising $325 million in its latest funding round. This new investment more than doubles the company's previous valuation from late 2020 and brings its total venture capital raised to over $600 million. The round is led by Dragoneer, Greenoaks Capital, and Tiger Global, with participation from several existing investors.
Investors view data labeling as a crucial "picks and shovels" strategy to profit from the growing AI boom, and Scale AI establishes itself as a leader in this sector. The company expands significantly beyond its original focus on image and video data for autonomous vehicles. It now supports a wide variety of vision and natural language data for clients in industries such as finance, logistics, and government.
Former Amazon executive Jeff Wilke joins Scale AI as a special advisor to CEO Alexandr Wang as the company experiences rapid commercial growth. The startup is currently on track to generate $100 million in revenue over a 12-month period, with sales doubling over the past year. Notable clients relying on Scale AI's data curation services include PayPal, Pinterest, and the U.S. Air Force, while Wang maintains there are no immediate plans for a public offering.
