Seattle Times and Newsday Sue OpenAI and Microsoft Over Copyright Infringement
The Seattle Times and Newsday file a lawsuit against OpenAI and Microsoft, alleging copyright infringement. The two news organizations claim the companies use their journalism as training data for AI models without permission and often reproduce passages from their reporting in response to user queries. The suit also names Microsoft because its Copilot product is built on OpenAI's technology.
The publishers join a growing list of plaintiffs taking OpenAI to court, including The New York Times, Ziff Davis, Merriam-Webster, and Encyclopedia Britannica. Nearly 400 local newspapers have also recently sued the two companies, arguing that chatbots reduce the need for readers to visit their sites, costing them valuable subscription revenue.
As part of the suit, The Seattle Times and Newsday seek the destruction of any copies of their works held by the companies, as well as training datasets and AI models that incorporate them. OpenAI and Microsoft do not immediately respond to a request for comment.
