Despite rapid advancements in the automotive industry, a universally agreed-upon standard definition for the term "self-driving" still lacks today. This ambiguity leads to confusion, as commercial advertising and branding frequently blur the lines between different levels of vehicle automation.
The global standards organization SAE International defines automation on a scale from 0 to 5, with Level 5 representing full autonomy in all driving domains. As of late 2025, no vehicle achieves this complete Level 5 status. Instead, current technology only functions safely within specific operational design domains, meaning these cars handle driving tasks independently only in limited geographic areas under particular conditions.
Waymo currently leads the practical application of this technology by providing rides in driverless taxis within these restricted boundaries. Other companies continue to develop and test their own systems, but the transition from limited domain operation to true anywhere, anytime autonomous driving remains a significant hurdle for the entire industry.
