SenseTime Group raises US$620 million in a new funding round, pushing its valuation to over US$4.5 billion and keeping its title as the world's most valuable artificial intelligence start-up. The round is led by major investment firms including Fidelity International, Hopu Capital, Silver Lake, and Tiger Global, with previous investors like Qualcomm Ventures also participating. This latest cash injection brings the three-year-old company's total raised funding to more than US$1.6 billion.

The Beijing-based company specialises in large-scale face and image analysis systems, achieving profitability just last year. SenseTime deploys its AI technology across a wide range of industries, including smart cities, smartphones, internet entertainment, automobiles, finance, and retail. The start-up experiences a rapid 50 percent surge in its valuation within just two months, following a previous US$600 million round led by Alibaba Group Holding in early April.

SenseTime operates as a key player in China's strategic push to become a global leader in artificial intelligence and secure dominance in the fourth industrial revolution. Founded by Chinese University of Hong Kong professor Tang Xiaoou, the company functions as a home-grown champion that aligns with the government's official road map for AI development. Beyond powering the world's largest facial recognition-enabled surveillance network, the company continues to expand its technology into various commercial sectors.
