Sequoia India Launches Surge Accelerator to Fund Early-Stage Startups
Sequoia India introduces Surge, a new accelerator program that provides $1.5 million investments to early-stage startups in India and Southeast Asia. The initiative aims to solve common regional founder struggles like being under-capitalized and over-diluted.
Sequoia India dives deeper into early-stage investing with the launch of Surge, an accelerator program targeting fledgling startups in India and Southeast Asia. Following the close of a $695 million fund, the firm shifts its focus to support founders ranging from the idea stage to those with existing product-market fit. Managing director Shailendra Singh explains that the program stems from extensive research showing that regional founders frequently face challenges like being under-capitalized, over-diluted, and burdened by time-consuming fundraising efforts.
The Surge program recruits 10 to 20 companies per batch and runs two four-month cohorts each year. The most notable feature of the initiative is a standard $1.5 million initial investment for all selected startups. Participants also gain the opportunity to raise additional capital from Sequoia and co-investors during a final "UpSurge" demo week, though companies are required to pay a program fee that is currently waived for the first cohort.
While the primary focus remains on local startups, the program also considers China-based companies expanding into India and Southeast Asia, as well as U.S. startups looking to enter the Asian market. Equity stakes are negotiated on a case-by-case basis, with anticipated pre-money valuations falling in the high single-digit to high-teens range. The first cohort is scheduled to begin in March, and applications are currently open for interested founders.
