Shared Claude Chats with Sensitive Data Surface on Google Search
Shared conversations from Anthropic's AI assistant Claude are appearing in Google search results, potentially exposing sensitive user data to the public. Reddit users discover that typing specific search operators into Google surfaces a large number of shared chats and Artifacts. Some of these conversations reportedly contain health records, private company documents, and the names and phone numbers of children.
The issue stems from Claude's "share chat" feature, which creates public links that allow anyone with the URL to view a conversation. While Anthropic maintains that the links are not discoverable unless users post them in publicly accessible places like forums or social media, the exposure reveals a significant gap between user expectations and reality. Competing services like Google Docs offer similar sharing functionality without documents appearing in search results.
Anthropic deflects blame, stating that users who share conversations are making that content publicly accessible and subject to archiving by third-party services. As of Monday afternoon, the exposure appears to be remediated, with test searches no longer returning results. The incident highlights the ongoing privacy challenges as AI chatbots become repositories for increasingly sensitive personal and professional information.
