Snapchat Launches Family Center Parental Controls Amid Regulatory Pressure
Snapchat introduces its first parental controls feature called Family Center, allowing parents to see who their teens chat with without reading message content. The tool follows similar moves by TikTok and Instagram but offers fewer restrictions due to Snapchat's default privacy settings.
Snapchat officially rolls out its first set of parental controls through a new feature called Family Center. The tool allows parents to link their account to their teenager's account through an opt-in invite process, giving them visibility into their child's activity on the social networking app.
Once connected, parents see who their teen chats with over the past seven days and view their friend list, but they do not see the actual content of the messages. Parents also gain the ability to report potential abuse directly to Snap's Trust and Safety team for further review. This feature is exclusively available for teens between the ages of 13 and 18.
The launch follows similar parental control updates from competitors like Instagram, TikTok, and YouTube, and arrives as regulators increase pressure on social networks to protect minors. While Snapchat's initial offering provides fewer controls than TikTok or Instagram, the company notes its default friend requirements and private friend lists inherently reduce risks for younger users.
