Snapchat Sees Record August Downloads Amid TikTok Ban Uncertainty
Snapchat experiences its largest month for new installs since 2019, likely benefiting from ongoing fears of a U.S. TikTok ban.
Uncertainty surrounding TikTok's future in the U.S. gives Snapchat a significant boost in August. According to preliminary estimates from Sensor Tower, the social media app sees approximately 28.5 million new installs across iOS and Android, marking its biggest month for first-time downloads since May 2019.
This surge represents a 29% year-over-year increase in downloads compared to just 9% growth in July. While a viral Disney eyes filter contributes to this success, the ongoing news about a potential TikTok ban drives notable changes in app store charts and benefits competitors like Snapchat.
Although Snapchat is not a direct TikTok rival, it actively courts the same young demographic by preparing to launch a new music-powered feature this fall. Similar to TikTok, this upcoming addition allows users to set their Snaps to music through newly established partnerships with major industry players like Warner Music Group and Universal Music Publishing Group.
