Snowflake IPO Delivers Historic $12.6 Billion Windfall for Sutter Hill Ventures

Venture capital firm Sutter Hill Ventures holds a massive $12.6 billion stake in Snowflake after the cloud data company's blockbuster IPO. The incredible return stems from an initial investment of less than $200 million by managing director Mike Speiser.

Snowflake debuts on the New York Stock Exchange with a staggering market cap over $70 billion, delivering a massive windfall for early backer Sutter Hill Ventures. The venture capital firm owns 20.3% of the cloud software company's outstanding shares, a stake currently worth about $12.6 billion. This monumental return comes from a total initial investment of less than $200 million by managing director Mike Speiser.

While these paper gains are not locked in yet due to lock-up periods and potential market volatility, the current valuation surpasses the roughly $7.7 billion return Accel famously secured from Facebook's 2012 IPO. Sutter Hill achieves this historic haul despite operating quietly and rarely receiving the same mainstream attention as larger Silicon Valley peers like Sequoia or Andreessen Horowitz.

Speiser maintains an extremely low public profile, avoiding the spotlight, tech podcasts, and social media, while his firm operates without a traditional website. Former Pure Storage CEO Scott Dietzen notes that Speiser deliberately avoids taking credit, preferring to let the entrepreneurs who run the daily operations bask in the success of the businesses he helps incubate.
