Social Audio Apps Surpass 20 Million Downloads in Early 2021
Social audio applications reach nearly 20 million global installs so far this year, with Clubhouse leading the pack at 15.3 million downloads. Competition in the voice-only space continues to heat up as newcomers challenge older platforms like Spoon.
Social audio applications reach nearly 20 million global installs so far in 2021, led by Clubhouse with approximately 15.3 million downloads. Clubhouse experiences a massive 300 percent surge in February, climbing from 2.4 million installs in January to 9.6 million. Although the app's download velocity slows in March to 2.7 million, it remains a dominant force in the emerging drop-in audio space.
Competitor Stereo follows a similar pattern, jumping 172 percent in February to 1.5 million installs before falling 35 percent in March. Meanwhile, veteran app Spoon demonstrates a different trajectory, having launched in 2016 and accumulated over 26 million lifetime installs. Spoon sees its peak growth in April 2020 as users seek social connections during COVID-19 lockdowns, but faces declining installs in early 2021 as high-profile alternatives capture consumer attention.
The sudden rise of these voice-centric platforms points to a growing fatigue with screen-heavy media among consumers. Experts attribute Clubhouse's rapid popularity to a mix of exclusivity, spontaneous conversations, and a fresh format for digital socializing. As the market heats up, both long-time contenders and new entrants continue to battle for the attention of listeners looking for alternative ways to connect online.
