Social Media Overtakes Traditional TV as Top Daily Election News Source

A new poll shows 40 percent of social media users rely on platforms like Facebook and YouTube for daily election news, outpacing network and cable news outlets.

A recent Morning Consult poll reveals that social media platforms serve as the top daily source for election news, outpacing traditional television outlets. The survey finds that 40 percent of social media users turn to these platforms daily for updates about the U.S. elections, compared to 32 percent who watch network news and 28 percent who rely on cable news.

Facebook leads the pack as the most popular social media site for election information, with 57 percent of users reading news there. YouTube follows in second place with 31 percent of users consuming election news on the video-sharing platform. Both of these platforms face ongoing challenges regarding the spread of election misinformation among their massive user bases.

Public opinion on how these platforms handle misinformation splits sharply along party lines. The data shows that 47 percent of Republicans believe the platforms do a "poor" job of moderating false election claims, while a plurality of 33 percent of Democrats rate their moderation efforts as "fair." This divide highlights the ongoing tension as social media companies balance their roles as information distributors with the growing public expectation that they act as responsible news gatekeepers.
