Social Media Users Flock to Mastodon and Tumblr Amid Twitter Upheaval
Frustrated by Elon Musk's chaotic leadership and strict content policies, thousands of users are leaving Twitter for decentralized and legacy platforms. Mastodon and Tumblr experience massive surges in new sign-ups as a direct result.
Thousands of Twitter users are abandoning the platform for alternatives like Mastodon and Tumblr following a series of controversial decisions by new owner Elon Musk. Since the acquisition, Musk lays off thousands of employees, drives out department heads, and implements confusing content moderation policies that suspend users for parody accounts.
Mastodon, a decentralized network made up of independently operated servers, sees explosive growth as the primary destination for fleeing users. The platform surpasses 1.6 million users because it offers a community-driven approach where no single central authority controls the entire network or imposes uniform rules.
Tumblr also experiences a massive resurgence during this exodus, with a 96 percent surge in US users and a 77 percent increase worldwide. As people worry about Twitter's stability and restrictive new guidelines, these alternative platforms successfully position themselves as safer, more predictable spaces for online communication.
