Software Startups Find Hidden Positives Amid 2022 Market Downturn
Despite rising layoffs and slowing venture capital, the 2022 software startup market shows hidden resilience when compared to historical data.
The 2022 startup market feels turbulent, but founders find genuine reasons for optimism if they look past immediate negativity. While recent venture capital slowdowns and rising layoffs dominate headlines, a longer-term historical perspective reveals that the current situation is far less severe than past market dips.
Startup layoffs are spiking compared to late 2021, but current numbers pale in comparison to the early 2020 pandemic crash. May 2022 sees around 16,000 startup layoffs across 70 events, which is significantly lower than the 25,000-plus monthly layoffs spread across more than 100 events during the spring of 2020.
Venture capital funding also shows a similar silver lining as investment declines from record-breaking 2021 levels. Instead of signaling a market collapse, this cooling period represents a return to a more measured pace of capital distribution rather than a complete freeze on startup funding.
