Solid-State Battery Startup QuantumScape Merges With SPAC in $3.3 Billion Deal
QuantumScape, a Volkswagen-backed solid-state battery startup, agrees to a $3.3 billion merger with Kensington Capital Acquisition Corp. The deal aims to help the decade-old company commercialize safer, higher-energy batteries for electric vehicles.
QuantumScape, a solid-state battery developer backed by Volkswagen Group, agrees to merge with the special purpose acquisition company Kensington Capital Acquisition Corp. The deal gives the decade-old startup a post-merger market valuation of $3.3 billion and provides a clear path to public markets.
Unlike many recent SPAC mergers involving unproven companies, QuantumScape brings a long history of high-profile backing from firms like Kleiner Perkins and Khosla Ventures. Volkswagen notably invests a total of $300 million into the company, including a $200 million injection earlier this year.
The company focuses on commercializing solid-state batteries that replace liquid electrolytes with solid alternatives to improve electric vehicle range and safety. These advanced batteries promise greater energy density in a smaller, lighter package while offering better thermal management and reducing fire risks.
