Sonos files a federal lawsuit against Google, accusing the tech giant of stealing proprietary wireless speaker technology. The audio company claims Google blatantly copies its patented technology, which allows speakers to connect seamlessly from room to room. Sonos states it originally shared this technology with Google engineers in 2013 to integrate Google Play software into Sonos devices, long before Google entered the smart speaker market.
Beyond patent infringement, Sonos alleges Google uses this misappropriated technology to vacuum up invaluable consumer data. This data collection fuels Google's continued dominance in the internet search and digital advertising markets. Sonos warns that if the lawsuit succeeds, Google could face a court order forcing it to pull more than a dozen products off the market, including Google Home Mini speakers, Pixel phones, tablets, and laptops.
Google strongly denies the patent infringement allegations and vows to fight the lawsuit in court. A Google spokesperson expresses disappointment that Sonos brought the lawsuits instead of continuing good faith negotiations. Sonos CEO Patrick Spence counters that despite repeated and extensive efforts over several years, Google shows no willingness to work out a mutually beneficial solution to the ongoing dispute.
