Sony reveals the Vision-S electric concept car at CES 2020 to demonstrate its advanced imaging and sensor capabilities rather than to enter the vehicle manufacturing business. The sleek prototype features 33 sensors located both inside and outside the vehicle to highlight the company's core focus on safety, security, and entertainment.
The vehicle utilizes a surrounding array of sensors that Sony calls the "Safety Cocoon" to provide a complete 360-degree view of the environment. External sensors detect potential hazards that the human eye might miss, while internal sensors monitor passenger behavior to detect fatigue or lack of movement.
Sony Electronics President Mike Fasulo explains that the company builds the car to understand automotive engineering from scratch so it can better supply its best technologies to the evolving auto industry. The prototype also features a massive interior display designed to revolutionize in-vehicle entertainment for future autonomous rides.
