SpaceX and T-Mobile Partner to Eliminate Mobile Dead Zones With Starlink
SpaceX and T-Mobile are teaming up to use Starlink satellites to provide mobile coverage in remote areas. The new service allows existing phones to send texts and images without traditional cell towers.
SpaceX and T-Mobile announce a partnership to end mobile dead zones by connecting Starlink satellites directly to existing cell phones. T-Mobile dedicates a portion of its mid-band PCS spectrum to SpaceX’s second-generation Starlink satellites, which feature extremely large antennas capable of transmitting signals directly to mobile devices.
This new service allows T-Mobile customers to send text messages, MMS, and use certain messaging apps from remote locations across the continental United States, Alaska, Hawaii, Puerto Rico, and even in coastal waters. Users do not need to purchase a new phone to access this feature, and the connectivity remains functional even if local cell towers go down during natural disasters.
The companies plan to include this satellite messaging capability in T-Mobile's most popular plans, with voice and limited video capabilities coming at a later date. Additionally, T-Mobile and SpaceX invite international carriers to join their alliance to enable reciprocal roaming and expand this life-saving global network.
