This reversal comes just hours after reports reveal that the U.S. Department of Defense considers covering the costs through a military financing fund. Out of the 25,300 terminals sent to the country, approximately 10,630 currently pay for the satellite service.
The ongoing operation of these donated Starlink terminals costs SpaceX $80 million so far, and this expense exceeds $100 million by the end of the year. Ukrainian officials emphasize that the satellite network is critical to the war effort because it keeps troops and civilians connected despite the widespread destruction of conventional communications infrastructure. SpaceX previously tells the Pentagon that it is not in a position to further donate terminals or fund the existing units indefinitely.
Despite Musk's recent promise to keep funding the Ukrainian government for free, the long-term future of Starlink in the region remains highly uncertain. European Union foreign ministers discuss the Starlink issue today, and U.S. officials explore potential funding avenues through the Ukraine Security Assistance Initiative. However, it is unclear whether the Pentagon will still step in to pay the tab now that SpaceX no longer actively seeks financial assistance.
