SpaceX Files to Expand Starlink Network with 30,000 Additional Satellites

SpaceX submits filings to the International Telecommunication Union seeking approval for 30,000 additional Starlink satellites, bringing the total proposed constellation to 42,000 spacecraft. The expansion aims to meet escalating global demand for fast, reliable broadband internet.

SpaceX seeks approval to add 30,000 more satellites to its Starlink broadband network, building upon the 12,000 spacecraft already authorized by U.S. regulators. The Federal Communications Commission submits 20 coordination requests to the International Telecommunication Union on behalf of SpaceX, detailing plans to operate these additional nodes at altitudes ranging from 203 to 360 miles. The ITU manages international radio spectrum rights and ensures that these space-based transmitters do not interfere with one another.

The company launched the first 60 Starlink satellites in May and prepares for another Falcon 9 launch from Cape Canaveral in late October or November. SpaceX plans as many as 24 dedicated Starlink missions next year as it steadily builds out the constellation. The new ITU filings indicate that the satellites utilize steerable spot beams to establish direct customer links, though specific launch schedules for this massive expansion remain undisclosed.

SpaceX confirms the submissions and highlights increasing global demand for low-latency internet services as the primary driver behind this monumental scale-up. By adding these 30,000 satellites, SpaceX aims to grow the total network capacity and data density of the Starlink constellation up to ten times that of earlier plans. Company officials maintain that the constellation continues to scale commensurate with market demand to serve users where connectivity currently remains non-existent, too expensive, or unreliable.
