SpaceX launches a packed rocket of 60 satellites into space, marking a crucial first step toward building a global high-speed internet network. The Falcon 9 rocket carries the heaviest payload in the company's history, lifting more than 37,000 pounds of mass into orbit from Cape Canaveral, Florida.
The satellites, known as Starlink, form an ambitious plan to create an interconnected network that beams high-speed internet to any location on the planet. CEO Elon Musk describes the project as one of the hardest engineering feats he has ever seen, noting that the company needs about 720 satellites in orbit to achieve moderate worldwide coverage.
Musk views Starlink as the revenue engine that funds SpaceX's ultimate goal of sending astronauts to Mars and establishing a human colony on the Red Planet. The full network ultimately consists of nearly 12,000 satellites, and although the project requires several billion dollars to complete, Musk confirms the company has sufficient capital to reach an operational level.
