This mission experiences a two-week delay due to poor weather conditions and schedule conflicts surrounding SpaceX's historic first astronaut flight. Despite the postponements, the liftoff occurs smoothly at 9:25 p.m. EDT, bringing the total number of Starlink satellites in orbit to nearly 500.
The aerospace company ultimately aims to deploy a massive network of 12,000 satellites to deliver high-speed internet to remote and underserved areas worldwide. While basic service requires about 400 satellites, SpaceX needs around 800 in orbit to achieve moderate global coverage for its broadband network.
