The initial testing phase, aptly named "Better Than Nothing Beta," targets users who previously registered their interest on the Starlink website. Participants gain early access to the emerging network by purchasing the required ground equipment for $499 and committing to a $99 monthly service fee.
The company warns testers to expect variable performance during this early stage, with data speeds fluctuating between 50 Mbps and 150 Mbps and latency ranging from 20 ms to 40 ms. SpaceX also notes that users experience brief periods of no connectivity at all as engineers continuously enhance the Starlink system. These honest expectations reflect the current state of the network as it operates with close to 900 satellites in orbit.
Since May 2019, SpaceX actively launches batches of about 60 satellites to build a massive megaconstellation that provides global internet coverage from space. The company plans to keep launching additional satellites and installing ground stations to steadily improve latency, data speeds, and overall network uptime. As the constellation grows, Starlink aims to deliver reliable high-speed broadband to underserved and rural areas around the world.
