SpaceX Secures $733 Million Contract for Eight Space Force Missions

SpaceX wins a massive $733 million contract from the U.S. Space Force to complete eight national security launches. This deal falls under the National Security Space Launch Phase 3 Lane 1 program, which focuses on lower-risk missions in near-Earth orbits. Seven of the launches support the Space Development Agency, while one serves the National Reconnaissance Office, with all flights expected to utilize Falcon 9 rockets starting in 2026.
The Space Force designs this Phase 3 Lane 1 program to foster competition among launch providers by allowing companies to bid on an annual basis. Currently, SpaceX competes alongside United Launch Alliance and Blue Origin for these missions. The military branch plans to open a new window later in 2024 for additional launch providers to join the Lane 1 pool.
This specific contract represents a portion of a larger $5.6 billion program that spans from fiscal year 2025 to 2029, with an option for a five-year extension. Over that entire period, the Space Force anticipates awarding at least 30 missions. Military officials expect increasing competition in the coming years as new launch companies bring their vehicles online.
