SpaceX's newest Starship prototype, known as SN4, successfully fires its single Raptor engine for the first time during a brief static fire test in South Texas. The vehicle remains firmly on the ground during this crucial checkout, which validates the rocket's propulsion systems and fueling processes. This engine firing represents a significant step forward for the Mars-colonizing Starship program, as it clears the path for an upcoming uncrewed test flight. The goal of this upcoming flight is to lift the massive steel vehicle to a target altitude of about 500 feet before safely returning it to the launch pad.
To date, only one previous Starship prototype, a stubby test vehicle called Starhopper, manages to get off the ground. While the SN4's flying days remain limited, SpaceX is already moving forward by building the SN5, a more advanced iteration that features three Raptor engines and aims for higher altitudes.
