Spotify confirms it is testing a real-time synced lyrics feature that scrolls text in time with the music. The feature is powered by Musixmatch and currently appears beneath the playback controls in the mobile app for users in select international markets like Canada, Indonesia, and Mexico. Listeners in these test regions also have the ability to view the lyrics in a full-screen experience.
This experiment comes as a direct response to Apple, which introduces perfectly timed live lyrics to Apple Music with the launch of iOS 13. Spotify actually offers lyrics support on its desktop app several years ago but later removes it. Since then, users repeatedly ask for the feature's return, with a request on Spotify's community feedback forum receiving more than 14,300 upvotes.
Instead of traditional lyrics, Spotify currently points users to its Genius integration called Behind the Lyrics, which mixes partial lyrics with background stories rather than providing full text. While Spotify regularly runs tests like this, it is not a confirmation of a near-term widespread launch. By delaying a full lyrics integration, the streaming giant gives Apple Music a notable competitive advantage in the streaming market.
