Stability AI Founder Emad Mostaque Resigns to Pursue Decentralized AI
Stability AI founder and CEO Emad Mostaque steps down from his role, handing interim leadership to the COO and CTO. Mostaque states his departure aims to combat the dangerous concentration of power in the artificial intelligence industry.
Stability AI founder and CEO Emad Mostaque resigns from his position to pursue decentralized artificial intelligence. His departure follows the recent exit of several top researchers at the company and comes as a surprise to many in the tech industry who associate Mostaque closely with the Stability AI brand.
Mostaque explains that the concentration of power in AI is bad for everyone and believes stepping down allows him to fix this issue both at Stability and elsewhere. He leaves behind a massive legacy, as he initially bootstrapped the company and helped launch the wildly popular open-source image generator Stable Diffusion in August 2022.
The board of directors appoints chief operating officer Shan Shan Wong and chief technology officer Christian Laforte as interim co-CEOs while they search for a permanent replacement. Under Mostaque's leadership, Stability AI achieves hundreds of millions of downloads and provides the foundational technology for numerous other successful AI startups.
