Stability AI Releases Open-Source Stable Diffusion Model for Consumer Computers

Stability AI publicly releases Stable Diffusion, a powerful text-to-image artificial intelligence model that runs efficiently on standard consumer hardware. The open-source tool allows everyday users to generate photorealistic artwork locally while adhering to a new permissive license.

Stability AI open-sources Stable Diffusion, an advanced artificial intelligence model that converts text descriptions into highly detailed, photorealistic 512×512 pixel images. Developed in collaboration with Runway, LMU Munich, Eleuther AI, and LAION, this technology represents a major leap in both speed and quality for AI-generated artwork.

Unlike previous image generation systems, Stable Diffusion operates efficiently on standard consumer GPUs instead of requiring massive, expensive supercomputers. This accessibility allows anyone to download and run the model directly on a standard desktop PC, democratizing the image creation process for both hobbyists and professionals. Beyond basic text-to-image generation, the model also supports image upscaling and style transfer based on simple sketches and text prompts.

The public release includes a beta web interface and API called DreamStudio, operating under a Creative ML OpenRAIL-M license that permits both commercial and non-profit use. To address potential misuse, the developers integrate a built-in AI Safety Classifier that filters out undesirable outputs, though they acknowledge the underlying training data from internet scrapes may still carry social biases.
