The performance gap between the United States and China effectively closes as models from both nations trade the lead multiple times throughout 2025 and early 2026. While the US currently holds a slim 2.7% edge in top model performance and produces more high-impact patents, China leads significantly in publication volume, citations, overall patent output, and industrial robot installations. Meanwhile, the United States dominates physical AI infrastructure by hosting over 5,400 data centers, which is more than ten times the count of any other country.
Despite achieving superhuman feats like winning gold at the International Mathematical Olympiad, AI models still exhibit strange failures like an inability to reliably tell time, demonstrating what researchers call a "jagged frontier" of capabilities. The entire global AI hardware supply chain relies heavily on a single Taiwanese foundry, TSMC, which fabricates almost every leading AI chip. A new TSMC facility in the United States begins operations in 2025, but the industry remains highly concentrated in both hardware manufacturing and geographic data center distribution.
