Stanford AI Index Report Shows Pandemic Resilience and Industry Shift
Stanford HAI releases its expansive 2021 AI Index Report, revealing that private investment and hiring grow despite the COVID-19 pandemic. The report highlights massive funding in AI drug discovery and a continuing brain drain into the tech industry.
Stanford HAI releases its comprehensive 2021 AI Index Report, showing that the AI industry remains highly resilient during the COVID-19 pandemic. Private investment and AI hiring grow significantly in 2020, while virtual conference formats lead to a major spike in attendance. The report also notes that machine learning plays a crucial role in accelerating COVID-related drug discovery.
Private funding for AI in drug design and discovery skyrockets to $13.8 billion in 2020, which represents a 4.5-fold increase from the previous year. The tech industry continues to attract top talent, as 65% of graduating North American AI PhDs now take industry jobs, up dramatically from 44.4% in 2010. Furthermore, generative AI systems advance to the point where humans struggle to distinguish synthetic text, audio, and images from real ones.
Despite these technical and economic leaps, the field still faces significant diversity challenges, with white graduates making up 45% of new U.S. AI PhDs while African American and Hispanic representation remains below four percent combined. Internationally, China overtakes the United States in AI journal citations, though the U.S. still produces and cites more high-impact conference papers. Additionally, the majority of new North American AI PhDs come from abroad, and most choose to stay in the U.S. after graduating.
