Startup Develops Firestick-Style Device to Upgrade Military Trucks to Autonomous Vehicles
ARX Robotics launches an AI-powered operating system and hardware kit that transforms legacy military vehicles into interconnected autonomous units. The system aims to solve the modern battlefield's connectivity issues by upgrading existing NATO fleets rather than replacing them.
ARX Robotics, founded by former German military members, launches a new system that functions like an Amazon Firestick for legacy defense equipment. The startup introduces ARX Mithra OS alongside a hardware kit containing cameras and sensors that mount directly onto military trucks to transform them into intelligent, autonomous units. This innovation aims to bridge the gap between modern digital warfare assets and the outdated, analog vehicles currently used by NATO and Western armed forces.
The need for this technology becomes starkly apparent on the modern battlefield, where interconnected systems are crucial for survival and success. ARX CEO Marc Wietfeld points out a major flaw in current military procurement, noting that recently purchased vehicles like the German Armed Forces' 3,500 Mercedes trucks lack basic software capabilities and even radios. By robotizing these existing fleets, ARX provides a cost-effective and rapid alternative to the expensive, time-consuming process of replacing entire vehicle arsenals.
The ARX Autonomy Kit supports over-the-air updates and features open interfaces designed to make diverse vehicle types communicate seamlessly on a single platform. Following a €9 million seed round led by the NATO Innovation Fund and a significant German military contract for deployment in Ukraine, the startup positions itself as a unique player in the defense sector. Wietfeld claims ARX has no known competitors in this specific space, as the system easily adapts to everything from Ukrainian Toyota trucks to British Challenger tanks.
